After Xbox, Discord Plans To Integrate Their Software on PlayStation

After announcing the integration of their software on Xbox, Discord is now planning to do the same for PlayStation. The software will be available on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 starting March 10. This is a big update for Discord users who are also PlayStation gamers.

The PlayStation Discord integration is still in the works, but it is expected to roll out in the near future. The update will allow Discord users to connect with their friends on PlayStation, see what games they are playing, and message them directly. PlayStation gamers will also be able to join Discord servers and use Discord Nitro, the premium subscription service.

This is a big step for Discord in their goal to become the central platform for all gamers. With this update, they are one step closer to that goal.

When Discord and PS plans to integrate?

Discord integration and Cloud streaming for current-gen games could be included in the next significant PS5 update, which would add to the console's ever-expanding feature set. The 7.00 firmware update for the console, which is rumored to release on March 8, will reportedly also offer the option to stream full PS5 games—as long as you pay an extra for PS Plus Premium.

From then on, it should not only be possible to link one's accounts and display the currently played game as status, but voice chat and other functions will also be available on the PS5.

The PS5 7.00 update will enter the beta phase in the next few days, but Discord will allegedly not be available to be tested yet. The beta is supposed to run until January 30, then we will probably know more.

In May 2022, Sony CEO Jim Ryan announced that Sony had partnered with Discord and would be aiming to roll out the service early this year.

“Together, our teams are already hard at work connecting Discord with your social and gaming experience on PlayStation Network. Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together.“   ~ Jim Ryan (CEO of Sony)

PlayStation users have already been able to link a PlayStation account with Discord since early 2022, with integration between the two services limited to sharing players’ game activity. With this new update, however, PlayStation gamers would be able to access many of Discord’s best features directly from their console without needing a PC or mobile device. For players who have an established social group on Discord already, this would allow them to stay in touch no matter what device they play on.

The Need?

This announcement, in our opinion, only serves as further proof of the PS5's ongoing struggle to keep up with the abundance of features Microsoft has placed onto the Xbox Series X|S since its release.

Although the PS5 is a magnificent piece of equipment, it is reasonable to claim that the Xbox Series X has a lot more features right now. It supports cloud gaming as part of Xbox Game Pass (which is a better subscription service than PS Plus), had Discord for months, and has all the same streaming options .

Sales, however, are one area where the PS5 has an advantage over rival companies. Despite all of its flaws, the console has recently surpassed the 30 million unit sales record. We don't expect that changing anytime soon.

Marketing, brand loyalty, or amazing exclusives like God of War: Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West could all be contributing factors. Whatever the reason, many gamers still favor the console.

Right now, Discord on PlayStation at least has the benefit of allowing your friends to join you in a game if they see you're online. We look forward to enjoying the day when we will be able to communicate with them as well without having to hold our smartphones on our laps while doing so.
