MEE6 Finally Ends its Music Service. What's the Future of Music on Discord?

MEE6, a popular Discord bot, has announced the discontinuation of its music service, which has left many users disappointed and frustrated (not me.). MEE6 has been a widely used bot on Discord due to its features, including playing music in voice channels, but the bot's decision to discontinue the music service has raised many concerns among users on Reddit.

Is this the first time?

No, this is not the first time that a Discord music bot has been shut down due to YouTube's legal warnings. In fact, several other popular music bots on Discord, such as Groovy and Rythm, have also faced similar warnings and have had to make changes to their service or shut down their music features entirely. YouTube has been taking down apps and bots on the use of its API for streaming copyrighted music without proper licensing, which has led to these bots being forced to make changes to comply with the platform's terms of service.

These bots violate YouTube’s terms of service, which states “access, reproduce, download, distribute, transmit, broadcast, display, sell, license, alter, modify or otherwise use any part of the Service or any Content” is strictly prohibited. After operating in a legal gray zone for a long time.Groovy has ended its service on August 30th, 2021 due to copyright issues with YouTube whereas Rhythm essentially got too big for its own good and was shut down by the devs on September 15th, 2021.

Probot, another popular Discord bot and the recent victim of this warnings, which was used for playing music, has recently announced that it will be discontinuing its music service. This decision was made after receiving a legal warning from YouTube, one of the sources that Probot used for playing music. According to Probot's developers, YouTube's legal team reached out to them and informed them that the bot was violating the platform's terms of service by using YouTube's API to stream copyrighted music. In response, Probot's developers have made the decision to discontinue the music service in order to comply with YouTube's terms and avoid any potential legal consequences.

Is MEE6 next?

With Probot's music service coming to an end, Discord users are once again left wondering about the future of music on the platform. This is not the first time that a popular music bot has been forced to discontinue its service due to legal concerns. MEE6, as mentioned earlier, also recently ended its music service due to the same reasons.

MEE6's music service was a unique and powerful tool for Discord communities, offering an easy way to play music within the chat. It supported multiple sources, including YouTube, Soundcloud, and Spotify, and allowed users to queue songs, create playlists, and even search for music within the Discord interface.

They have stated that ending the music service was a difficult decision but a necessary one. The developers have also expressed their gratitude for the support of the MEE6 community and their hope that users will continue to use the bot for its other features, such as moderation and custom commands.

On the other hand, the decision to end MEE6's music service has not been without controversy. Some users have expressed their hatred for the bot and have taken to supporting YouTube's legal team in their fight against the bot. The reasoning behind this support stems from the belief that MEE6 was breaking the terms of service of YouTube by using its API to play music.

Many users feel that bots like MEE6 are taking away revenue from artists and creators by providing music without proper licensing and compensation. While this argument has some merit, it's important to note that bots like MEE6 do have licenses in place, and the costs of licensing music can be high. Additionally, the developers behind MEE6 have stated that the costs of licensing music and maintaining the service were becoming increasingly difficult.

The Future?

One significant development that has impacted the future of music on Discord is the discontinuation of the popular bot MEE6's music service. This has led to a loss of an essential feature that many users relied on. It has also highlighted the challenges surrounding the integration of music into social platforms and the ever-changing landscape of copyright laws.

As MEE6's decision to discontinue its music service demonstrated, complying with copyright laws can be complex and costly, and this may continue to pose challenges for the future of music on Discord. The developers must carefully tackle these problems so that they can continue to provide a space where music lovers can enjoy and share their favorite tunes without legal implications.

Another significant concern for the future of music on Discord is the rise of music streaming platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music, which offer users access to vast music libraries and personalized playlists. While Discord has provided a social platform for music lovers to connect, the rise of these streaming platforms may result in users migrating away from Discord for their music needs, leading to a decline in music-related activity on the platform.

Discord hasn't offered many reliable options for music listeners. FredBoat and other music bots that managed to avoid the initial wave of shutdowns face an uncertain future.

Users can choose to link their Spotify account to Discord, which, while not a direct fix, enables friends to see what they listen to and join in on listening parties. But only premium Spotify users have access to this feature, which limits who can take advantage of these benefits.

Little is known about their future at this time. Some, like Groovy, have completely ceased operations and advise against using music bots going forward. Others, like Rythm, have future plans that are hinted at on their website, but no specifics have been made public.
